![]() “It is sad that the relevant authorities are just issuing NOTAM on the development over 24 hours after the light collapsed. The Acting General Manager, Public Affairs, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mrs Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, asked our correspondent to send a text message when she was contacted on the development.Ī response to the text message sent by The PUNCH to her was still being expected as of the time of filing this report.Ī pilot with one of the domestic airlines, who chose to speak on condition of anonymity on the matter, said the collapse of the approach light could inhibit pilots’ capability to land airplanes safely in bad weather.Īccording to him, the approach lights assist pilots in landing on the runway. The NOTAM, dated May 31, 2022, was signed by one Abah G.N, an official of the airspace agency.Īs of 10:30pm on Tuesday, it was uncertain when the problem would be fixed. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak on the matter, said it was sad that the relevant aviation authorities did not issue a Notice to Airmen on the development until later on Tuesday.Ī copy of the NOTAM which was sighted by The PUNCH showed that the document was issued by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency’s Aeronautical Information Services department. ![]() Impeccable airport sources said the approach lights collapsed on Monday evening and pilots were subsequently forced to rely solely on their onboard equipment to land airplanes. ![]() It is a lighting system that assists the pilot/aircraft to come in and land safely. The AAI is planning to complete the works by October. The approach lights on the runway of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, have gone off, forcing pilots to depend solely on equipment onboard their aircraft to land, findings by The PUNCH have revealed.Īn approach lighting system is a lighting system installed on the approach end of an airport runway and consisting of a series of light-bars, strobe lights, or a combination of the two that extends outward from the runway end, according to Wikipedia. ![]() “The commissioning of the lighting system will bring it further down and the Air Traffic Control will not have to go for flight diversion from here to adjoining airports during inclement weather,” Airport Director C.V. With ILS, the aircraft can land at low visibility of even 800 metres. The barrette lights will supplement the Instrument Landing System (ILS) installed to guide aircraft to precision landing. It hopes that the local people will support the initiative following the talks with the Vallakadavu-Vayyamoola Joint Action Council and the residents’ association in the locality. In Muttathara, these lights will be mounted on the land under the AAI. Other lights near the bank of the Parvathy Puthanar will be installed on cantilever/GI truss. In the Barrette system, one pole will be at the beginning of the NS depot-Vallakadavu road near the Ponnara bridge and the other on Ponnara bridge approach road and the height clearance will be 5.5 m from the ground. The AAI says the light system with one cross bar will not affect the movement of road users through the bridge. The AAI has secured permission of the Public Works Department to mount the lights on the Ponnara bridge above the Parvathy Puthanar that runs close to the boundary wall. The remaining 360 m is outside the airport premises till Muttathara on the approach path to Runway 32 that is 3,396-m long. The installation of the high intensity, uni-directional barrette lights for all weather conditions has been completed in the first 540 m of the threshold of the runway on the Vallakadavu side. The Barrette light system, as specified by the Director General of Civil Aviation, is mandatory for the airport to get the aerodrome licence. Placed every 30 metres, they will ensure more visibility of the central line of the runway to the pilot about to land. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is gearing up to complete the conversion of the existing approach lighting system into Barrette Cat I approach lighting system at the beginning of Runway 32 of the Thiruvananthapuram international airport.Ī barrette is three or more ground aeronautical lights closely spaced together in a transverse line so as to appear as a bar of lights at least three metres in length from a distance.
